Functional incontinence is common in persons who have disabilities, limited movement, or live in care settings. With functional incontinence, the bladder and bowel are working properly, but other physical, mental, or environmental factors make it hard to get to the toilet or manage clothing in time.

Common causes
Arthritis or mobility difficulties
Poor vision or balance
Memory loss or confusion (for example, dementia)
Toilets that are hard to reach or clothing that is difficult to manage
Assessment
A continence nurse/advisor may review your home or care environment for barriers – simple environmental and routine adjustments
can help maintain independence and confidence.
Self-help tips
Keep walkways clear and well-lit
Wear easy-to-remove clothing
Set up regular toilet times or reminders
Gentle movement including balance and coordination exercises
Treatment options
Environmental changes and adaptive equipment (such as leaving the toilet light on, or a handrail by the toilet)
Support from carers or occupational therapy
Continence products for dignity and comfort
